Basic Backgammon Directions

Like baccarat, many people were introduced to the game of backgammon by seeing it displayed prominently in a James Bond film. While the scene where Roger Moore one ups the bad guys by turning the tables on their attempts at cheating is fun to watch, it is somewhat confusing because there are no backgammon directions provided. That is, the rules are never explained so it is hard to follow the way the cheating determines the outcome! Then again, since the audience purchased a ticket to be entertained by the film and not to get a lecture on the game of backgammon, the exclusion of any backgammon directions is fairly understandable.

Like any other game, backgammon would be fairly difficult to play if the players had no idea what the rules are! This is why a clear explanation of backgammon directions is needed. If the understanding of backgammon directions is unclear, then the game will devolve into a series of arguments between players in regards to the rules. That hardly sounds like fun.

The primary purpose of backgammon is for one player to move the entirety of his chips into his home board and then, ultimately, get them off the board all together. This is achieved by rolling a pair of dice and moving the backgammon chips along the “points” (triangular markings on the board). One need not only move one chip at a time. If the dice roll turns up a five and a two, the player can move a backgammon chip seven times or move one chip four times and another chip three times.

Backgammon is not a terribly difficult game to learn, but a clear baseline understanding of the rules is required before really making any serious attempt to play. Invest a little bit of time understanding backgammon directions and hours of fun will be at hand.
